Lot No. 7

Francesco Guardi

(Venice 1712–1793) Architectural capriccio with figures, oil on canvas, 27 x 19.8 cm, framed

Although Guardi is celebrated in the main for his topographical Venetian views, his genius is also wonderfully expressed in his capricci which take familiar Venetian buildings, or as in this case ruins, to create imaginary settings. The capricci were extremely popular among Grand Tourists and many were collected by English and European patrons, but many collectors were Venetians themselves who appreciated the fantastical and imaginary arrangement of the compositions. These imaginary landscapes were considered to be examples of the great artistry and imagination of the painter, who, in these compositions, was not bound by the physical representation of the city itself, but able to fully express a whimsical artistic spirit. In these capricci Francesco Guardi had the full opportunity of creating the imaginary.
